Wat Mae An – Our new Hand to Paw temple!

DSCF0459Hello everyone,

Just a quick update to let you know the 4 students from the Saturday CAS team (Julia, Tor, Thai and TZ) met at our new temple outreach at Wat Mae An. We were met by the Lung Por, village Mayor (K. Rat), A. Chris and A. Boo to help with translations and explanations of what our outreach program could do to help the monks and dogs that reside at Wat Mae An.

Much to our delight we were met by 9 puppies, 1-1/2 months old! Later to find out the next day that there are actually 13 pups! A new challenge for all of us as our responsibilities will include vaccinating, bathing, de-ticking and de-fleaing the pups. Seeing that they are well fed and remain healthy is an important role for us to keep. Once the pups are 6 months old we will begin to spay (sterilize) the females.

Other than the pups, the temple is home to the mother of the pups, one other female (Mam) and one male. I took Mam to the vet on Sunday to be sterilized and she is already back and recuperating at the temple.

This Thursday the CAS students will bathe the pups and spray them for fleas. We will also vaccinate the mother and male dogs for rabies-combo and heartworm vaccines.

The CAS students will vaccinate the puppies on Saturday, Oct 10th. So we have a couple of busy days coming up. I hope you like the photos. The monks and village are very happy about our project and what we can do to help the monks take care of their dog population.

We will also be assisting the village to get the female street dogs that reside around the temple area sterilized to keep the puppy population in the village down. Fundraising will still be a major goal for us this year and into the next.

Due to the generous donation from CAS student TZ, we had enough funds to buy all the vaccines, needles, syringes, puppy food, and spay the female dog Mam. A heartfelt thank you to TZ! Also, many thanks to Julia, Tor, Thai and TZ for working with the Lung Por and mayor of the village to find out how many dogs live at the temple, how many times they are fed, do they have enough dog bowls…They also took numerous photos of the puppies and charted their descriptions and logged their health on that day.

After visiting the temple a quick detour to Mae Rim to meet the vet that will be spaying and helping us when we have sick or injured dogs at either temple. He seemed quite pleased to work with us and had a bemused smile for the efforts we are trying to make in our community. He seemed happy to be a part of that.

Next stop was the temple of Nong Pla Mun where we had just a short time to look after dogs bites, administer some medication, throw a few bones and a quick couple of cuddles and our day was complete!
