Street Project (part 2) - Assadathon Rd.

Follow up to Street Project (part 1)

Here is Bua being returned today to her neighbourhood after sterilisation and 1 week after care at the Care for Dogs - rescue shelter.

Upon returning her I noticed Malee (below) is still suffering from a suspected ear infection or haematoma.

Malee Malee

I had asked Khun Dao to have her ear checked at the vet last week but she had not had the time yet to take her. She mentioned to me over the phone today that someone had already been giving Malee medicine.

I loaded her into my car anyway & off we went to the local vet. After an examination the Doctor confirmed with me that it was a very inflamed ear infection. He gave me an ear cleaning liquid and ear drops and gave me a demonstration on how to clean her ear first then apply the drops deep into her ear canal to treat the root of the infection. I double checked with Khun Dao again about the mentioned other medicine and found they were diluting Betadine with water & trying to treat it with that. The Doctor wasn’t impressed and said their method was useless.

I returned Malee to her friends and repeated the ear treatment demonstration to Kh. Dao & the security guard to be applied twice per day. Malee also has an open bloody wound on the outer area of her ear from frequent vigorous scratching trying to relieve the itching on the inside of her ear. This is now being treated with Betadine and I have given them a neck collar to stop her from scratching her wound. Hopefully she will feel some relief soon.

While I was there I managed to spray 2 dogs with flea treatment.

& pregnant dogs should not be sprayed. Bua had already been treated for fleas at the shelter.

One problem generally leads to more so it didn’t stop there. I was patting the pregnant female (Princess) & noticed her tummy grazed so treated that with diluted Povidone.

PhotobucketI noticed liquid dripping from her vagina and upon investigation found it to be black or very dark green liquid which is extremely ‘abnormal’. Called the Dr. who suggested she may have ‘still born’ pups inside her or that it could be pyometra or a complicated delivery that may need intervention.

As she is about 3-4 months pregnant she was well overdue for birth which is normally about 63 days so I feared the worst for her pups. At 7pm, after discussions with Sarah, I rushed her straight to Purpoon Clinic for an examination.

I had just lifted her out of the car when to my horror a gush of black liquid & gunk came flowing out of her all over my legs and onto the ground along with one of her puppies still in its sack. The staff (& Gill who was there collecting abandoned kittens) rushed to my aid but unfortunately the pup was not alive.

An x-ray showed 3-4 more pups inside and tonight they will conduct c-section surgery to remove them and sterilise her at the same time.

Although not likely, I’m keeping hope that they may find the puppies alive.

I’ll know the results tomorrow so keep a look out for my update.

Teresa " To be able to save as many dogs as possible from these situations and give them a better life full of the love, care and compassion that they deserve fills me with a strong feeling of contentment. To see puppies with little hope go from starvation & weakness to full of life and dogs that shivered in fear at any sudden movement suddenly so affectionate after we rescue them or distemper cases with little or no hope make a full recovery, makes all our hard work at Care for Dogs so worthwhile.[More]"
