Street Project (part 1) - Assadathon Rd.

As is usually the case for me, I stumbled across this pack of dogs by accident one day and yet another street project was born. Whilst running some errands I noticed 2 puppies run out from a driveway of a big dormitory style apartment block. Curiosity got the better of me & I followed them inside where I found Bua, the mother of the 2 puppies and the rest of the pack living there.

Apart from the 2 puppies that were rather scared and impossible to get close to, the other dogs were all quite friendly. I sat stroking, playing, checking teeth, gums, ears, nails, fleas, ticks, wounds etc (the usual drill) and after a while a lovely young lady and resident there named Khun Dao approached me. She, and the security guard, showed genuine concern and care for the stray dogs of this area and proceeded to fill me in on them. The story & situation of the pack unfolds….

  • Bua’ is the mother of the two 3 to 4 month old puppies. At the time not sterilised.
  • 3 other females – 1 already sterilised (‘Malee’), 1 not sterilised, 1 pregnant (‘Princess’).
  • 1 or 2 male dogs. Not sterilised.
  • Malee had previously given birth to 4 pups. She left the pups briefly one day & returned to find them all dead, killed by Bua.
  • Malee with an ear infection.
  • Princess was heavily pregnant but no-one could give me an exact pregnancy assessment.
  • They suspected the other un-sterilised female was also pregnant.
  • The males were constantly mounting the females whilst I was there.
  • All heavily infested with fleas.

I immediately set a plan into action with Khun Dao to start sterilising the females & attend to other needs. I suggested she try to raise the funds by taking up a collection with other residents of the apartment building. Although Care for Dogs run a street sterilisation program we also rely solely on donations and fundraising so any additional support financially from the community is always greatly welcomed. If only more people could take responsibility for their 4 legged neighbourhood friends. To my amazement & appreciation Khun Dao had raised the funds for 1 dog within a few days & called me to start with 1 sterilisation (Bua).

I picked Bua up today and delivered her to our rescue shelter ready for tomorrow’s Care for Dogs sterilisation run.

I’ll keep you posted on this street project, Bua’s return and the rest of her pack soon.

Teresa " To be able to save as many dogs as possible from these situations and give them a better life full of the love, care and compassion that they deserve fills me with a strong feeling of contentment. To see puppies with little hope go from starvation & weakness to full of life and dogs that shivered in fear at any sudden movement suddenly so affectionate after we rescue them or distemper cases with little or no hope make a full recovery, makes all our hard work at Care for Dogs so worthwhile.[More]"
