Mayla and Anke – Love at first (and second) sight
Maybe some of you remember Anke, who has been volunteering for Care for Dogs and
is a supporter of us ever since .
And for her, a holiday flirtation turned out to be real love.
This is the newest chapter of this love story:
In January I was a volunteer for one week at the Shelter of Care for Dogs – I wrote about it before. At this time, Karin took me with her on her trips to medically treat and feed temple dogs and cats.
There one puppy which was half starved and injured approached us. Full of fleas and completely shattered, “Floh” (as I affectionately AND legitimately called her) was lying on my lap the whole afternoon. And then it happened – it was love at first sight with her. Although at this point I didn’t consider to keep her.
Anyway, she was brought to the shelter’s quarantine station after the vet trip where she courageously let everything happen to her. Actually, at this point, the matter was done for me and I took my flight back to Germany…
But every day my thoughts were with this cutie, which I later called “Mayla” and Karin kept me up to date on her recovery – thanks to the internet.
And then, there was this certain day when I wrote this “fateful” sentence: “I’d rather have taken Floh (Mayla) with me to Eutin (Northern Germany) most of all, if it were just not so complicated to do.”…Karin’s prompt answer: “That’s not complicated to do!!”
After waiting three – for me never-ending seeming – months due to the export regulations, Mayla is finally with me!!!!!!!
When she jumped out of the car of Karin’s nephew David after her long-distance and time-intensive journey, it was immediately love at second sight!
What a cute little thing. Nothing was to be noticed concerning the exhausting journey. However she was not that enthusiastic about having an one hour drive heading north from Norderstedt/Hamburg to Eutin. Then, finally, arriving at home.
Now Mayla is with us for a couple of weeks and every day the bond between us becomes stronger and stronger. I need to mention that there are nine adult cats in my house which were not that happy about the new “immigrant”. Mayla, on the other side, was really happy and wanted to only play with them instantly!!!!!?????
Well, after one week, when she was fixed on a check cord, she is now allowed to run around freely in the house and the garden and bit by bit, harmony returns within the Stark family.
Mayla is teachable and begins to follow my commands – although often reluctantly. But no one is born a master and we have plenty of time to practice. From August on, we will go to dog obedience training courses and then we’ll turn that little bubbly teeny into a “well-behaved” girl. The new environment with those uncountable different smells needs to be explored and there is just soooo much to read in “German newspapers”. That’s really taxing my patience!
Walking Mayla is really good for me and will keep me fit the next years. I truly fought with myself for a long time whether to get a dog or not, but my son told me: “If Mayla is the key to your happiness, than take her.” And he was absolutely right: I am happy.
And that’s why I want to say a big thank you to Karin and her family, to Gill for the affectionate care of Mayla, to the animal protection team of SCAD in Bangkok for the accommodation and transfer to the airport and to the flight partner Mr. Norbert Zaborowski for providing assistance and sparing no effort.
When I look at Mayla I think of the many lovely dogs at the shelter which are only waiting to make people happy as much as I am now.
We hug you and say/bark “Thank You!”
Yours,
Mayla and Anke
We at Care for Dogs are happy to hear of this happy end of Mayla and Anke and wish for all our dogs and our fellow men that something like this will happen to them, too.

Michael " Being part of the team I think, was so much more effective. If alone, I would only have given a street dog some food for few days, not knowing what else to do in a strange town when seeing a sick dog. Joining with the other volunteers at CfD, I was part of a steady approach. You give dogs some hope for a better life and don't have to disappoint them when they might wait on you, when your plane already took off. Here is a team and it's just another friendly face, the next (holiday) volunteer will take up your work. [More about Michael]"
