Jenny - Life in a box
Jenny lived in a box. That makes you think the owner didn’t love or care for the dogs in her home. To the contrary, she was devoted to them.
About 6 months ago a Thai family living in Bangkok, contacted Care for Dogs and asked if we could help them with a very difficult problem. It transpired that their elderly mother who lived in Chiang Mai, spent all her life rescuing dogs from her neighbourhood and looking after them the best she could at her home and giving them a place to stay and food with what little money she had.
As many doggy people will know only too well, not every neighbour is a dog lover and when you have more than one dog, there is always a greater chance of barking or noise from their play. This lady had 14 dogs and in order to pacify the people living nearby, she would keep them in wooden crate / boxes so that the dogs would not get over excited and make noise and therefore cause the neighbours to make her life more difficult.
Sadly, the lady died, leaving 14 dogs in need of a new carer and the Bangkok based family looked to Care for Dogs to help. The family, like their mother are animal lovers and thankfully they made the effort to find people to help them, rather than turning the dogs out on the street, taking them to a temple & hoping someone else would deal with the problem or worst still, just let them die in their empty home.
The scene at the home was shocking and unacceptable, with dogs being kept in a constant state of loneliness & boredom. It was clear the old lady was trying to act with the best of intension’s but Care for Dogs were relieved to be able to help give these poor creatures a better future outlook. When the 14 arrived at the shelter, they all looked well fed and generally in good health with shiny coats too. But the social problems were obvious. It was as if they were suffering from something similar to “Cabin Fever”.
Jenny, one of the 14, is an elderly girl, with just a little time left to enjoy what remains of her life. She had a chronic case of Dermatitis and this was not helped by the lack of direct sunlight she was denied whilst living in a box. But after routine induction to the shelter, she was cleaned up and her Dermatitis is improving with regular care. Anyone seeing her, realises she looks like she has been through an awful time and we hope someone will find room in their lives to offer her love and companionship she rightly deserves.
If you think you are able to find space in your home for one of these rescued dogs, please get in touch either by phone or email.
There are many puppies, teenagers and adult dogs awaiting a new home.
