Freedom makes Headlines Again!
Freedom the German Shepherd’s arrival at Care For Dogs in April made headlines because of the harrowing circumstances in which he and his friend Hope were found in and rescued from. Read about that here … Both dogs rescued were in very poor condition, so I fostered them for six weeks and with love and plenty of good food they made an amazing return to full and vigorous good health.
It was clear that Hope and Freedom were extremely close so we decided that they would only be re homed together, however, once they were taken to the shelter their relationship changed. Freedom, being the biggest dog at the shelter and pretty confident, soon found that he was having to defend his position amongst other Alpha wannabe males and he began to assert himself, to establish his position. He seemed to drift away from Hope, who, being a typical Golden Retriever, was always laid back and chilled out.
So we decided that Hope could be adopted overseas to Holland and plans were underway. However, as time passed and Freedom no longer faced challenges to his position as Alpha male, he settled into a very quiet life where just his presence amongst the other dogs kept the balance and he returned to the gentle natured softie that I had see for 6 weeks in my home and his closeness with Hope returned too. (Any dog psychologists out there would find our shelter fascinating!) They play together and sleep together and volunteers walk them together, their bond of friendship is obvious.
Once again we discussed their future, and as the dogs needs are always our top priority, we were wondering if it would be best for them to stay together, that they would both be happier this way. The personal situation of the lady in Holland had in the meantime also changed and therefore the circumstances were not ideal any more to adopt Hope. So in mutual agreement the decision was made to keep the two dogs together and find a new home for them.
So they are now available for adoption together. If you are thinking of making them a part of your family, then reading my previous blogs will give you an insight into their wonderful personalities. They are both very gentle natured, and despite the terrible circumstances we found them in, I believe that they once had very kind and caring owners because they love being with people, all people, and they take new situations in their stride. They were a real hit with local children at our Open Day in June. They walk well on the leash, and obey basic commands in English & Thai. They are keen to please and learn fast.
But the best way to know if these boys are for you is to come out to the shelter and spend some time getting to know them, take them for a walk and sit with them. these 2 boys get on very well with other dogs but integration with females is recommended. And here is a great asset, while they were at my house they didn’t bark at every passers by, so not something to be worried about if you are considering how they might fit into your life style.
As with all adoptions made from Care for Dogs, both have been fully wormed & vaccinated.
If you or anyone you know would like to consider adopting these 2 gentle creatures, please contact Ally on 0847 52 52 55 to arrange a visit to the shelter or send us an email.
