Cats rejected by Temple – Kittens need homes
Earlier this year, Care for Dogs agreed with the Abbot at Wat Doi Kam to progress the sterilisation of the many dogs at the temple and also the cats that were now living there.
Indeed we went along & successfully blow darted many of the dogs that had previously eluded capture for sterilisation and the monk was keen to have 2 cats living in the temple sterilised too. You can read all about that here …
The dogs were included in our free sterilisation program and after surgery, stayed at the shelter for a week rest & recuperation, receiving medication, care & food.
Likewise, one of the temples cats was also returned after a week of boarding at Gill’s foster home in the city, where she looks after many cats on behalf of Care for Dogs.
But the other cat, who we called Momma, it turned out was already pregnant when we collected her and instead of sterilising her & therefore disposing of the growing baby foetus’s, the vet made a quick decision during surgery.
The cat was stitched back up and she was cared for by Gill, nursed through the final days of pregnancy and then allowed to bring her litter of kittens into the world without getting eaten by starving dogs back at the temple.
Amazing but true. The woman at the temple who cooks for the monks and sells amulets and Buddha images there, confirmed that the cycle of pregnancy-birth-kittens-eaten-pregnancy-birth … had been common for this cat.
When the first cat was returned and the woman had learned about Momma & her litter, she not only agreed that it was a great idea for Gill to take care of them but made a point of saying she was looking forwards to getting the adult cat back and would like a male kitten from the litter too.
So this week, (after Momma had finished suckling her kittens for 8 weeks & she had finally been sterilised) Soraya was tasked to return Momma & Son.
From the title of this post it was obvious trouble was to occur.
The woman who had previously cared for cats, no longer wants the cats back. In fact, the woman told Soraya face to face, to take the cats to another temple and dump them there.
Now, Gill has a massive problem to overcome. Not only does she have to regain her faith in people she thought were animal lovers but she has to find homes for 4 male kittens and 1 female & their homeless & rejected Momma.
Now how sad it that ?
Care for Dogs (and of course Cats) does not dump cats & kittens at temples. As a result, Gill has these and other kittens needing homes and the rejected Momma & Son have just joined the list. They are all vaccinated, de-wormed and litter trained as well as being very sociable and friendly.
So if you or anyone you know would be able to offer a home to either a male or female kitten or cat, please get in touch with us as soon as possible.
Please call Gill or Emma on 0871 891 623 or send us an email.
