Today the time had come to say good-bye to our grande old lady Aguile. Her spondylosis had detoriated very quickly and since last Saturday she was not able to walk any more and the painkillers were only partly able to control her pain.

It was especially hard on Winifred who had looked after Aguile since 9 years in the park where Aguile used to live until she came to our shelter two years ago. Winifred fully sponsored Aguile’s stay and her medical costs -many thanks again!

No, it was not with the help of facebook or website but with the help of an announcement with a traditional megaphone of Obato in Sanpatong that a family heard about a missing doggie that happened to hang around their house for a few days and sounded just like the missing one.

A phone call, a bit of an odysee due to Thai-Farang misunderstandings from Wiang Dong to Sanpatong to Big C Hang Dong to finally Big C Sanpatong where tail-wagging Mii Boon was confirmed to be the right one.

Happy people (one family walking with a reward in the next restaurant – another family walking away with a doggie in their arm) – happy doggie – happy end!

Our dear Mii Boon has disappeared in Sanpatong. He had been adopted on September 25 + escaped 2 days later when someone forgot to close the gate.

Sanpatong – a provincial satellite town approx. 30 km south of Chiang Mai. The reason why Khun Chaay and I came here today was not a happy one:

We searched for Mii Boon who had escaped two days after his adoption – the nephew of the owner had left the gate open when he came home! We walked around in the area, called Mii Boon, put up reward posters, talked with people and monks but without success. Distressing. He had been seen in the area twice yesterday and today, but escaped when people came nearer – we still hope he will come back.

Sanpatong is also notorious for a dog meat market which makes the search for Mii Boon even more pressing. We asked for the location of this market and were told that it was 10 driving minutes away. We drove down the main road of the town but couldn’t find a market that would fit to the description.

We asked several people and were finally told that the market had moved to another location one or two months ago but we couldn’t find out more. We got the impression people were not very keen on talking about this topic, even when Khun Chaay went there on his own and I stayed “undercover’ in the pick-up. We stopped at another market and finally we found someone who showed us a place right on the other side of the road where dog meat was sold.

It was a typical Thai roadside restaurant, with drinks, a curry in a black pot, and various meat on a grill. I had a closer look – little birds on a wooden stick – deep fried – disgusting. Then I looked at the pot and remembered that I had read that dog meat curry is kept in black pots for easy recognition, apparently people don’t want to put up signs. When we asked the vendor, a lady in her late twenties, if she has dog meat for sale, she told us that the curry has dog meat and proudly steered the curry and showed us the meat in it – 20 Baht per dish – readily available. She also said she usually has grilled dog meat but apparently ran out of supply today. I tried to chase away thoughts of visualizing the dog whose life as “man’s best friend” has ended in a slaughter house.

Two younger men approached, sat down and ordered a plate of this curry. Another customer came and bought the same curry in the usual “take away” plastic bags. The lady told us that when dog owners get annoyed of their dogs, e.g. because they chase chickens or destroy their shoes, they often end up on the dog meat market. I asked her if she doesn’t feel pity for the dogs, but she shrugged her shoulders and said unconcerned that not the dogs but only the meat were delivered to her. The view to the back area was hidden behind a barrier and someone tells us that dogs get slaughtered there. We have heard that there are more restaurants which sell dog meat but that would need further investigation.

Many people think that dog meat business happens only in the north-east of Thailand and in other countries but fact is that it also happens around Chiang Mai, though probably in a smaller scale, but the thought of it is still sickening.

20 metres away from the dog meat stall – another world – a big vegetarian roadside restaurant with peaceful music and friendly staff. We enjoy a great vegetarian curry and watch how people go in and out at the dog meat stand. It is often said that only hilltribe people eat dog meat but we don’t get this impression here.

We thought that a vegetarian restaurant near a dog meat stand is a great place to put up our anti-dog-meat poster (“Dogs are family – not groceries”) and indeed – the owner happily agrees with a broad smile and we fix the poster at their outside fence where customers of the dog meat stand need to pass. We hope it can help to raise awareness and give one or the other person food for thought.

One of our planned activities against the dog meat trade is a campaign with posters which shows the health threats that eating of dog meat can cause, e.g. rabies, E. Coli 107 virus, salmonella, hepatitis, leptospirosis and internal parasites – we hope this will have even a stronger effect on dog meat consumers.

We also put up more posters for Mii Boon and leave with the deepest wish in our heart to find our little fellow safe and sound and take him back to our shelter.

Poster Dog Meat Trade

Mange is a terrible disease not only to the eyes of us but even more to the well being of the dogs.
But most of the time it needs just some resources and effort to treat it and after not to long results are amazing.

Remember Mii Diau, a dog we posted a couple of weeks ago (see here…)? He was dumped on the street by his owner, where this gentle spirited dog was attacked by other dogs resulting in a serious eye injury.

Mii Diau’s eye injury has healed very well and fortunately the eye could be saved! This gentle, calm boy is looking for a home of his own – streets are not the right place for him. He is easygoing and loving despite the ordeals he has gone through. A perfect dog for any family!

Word of Care for Dogs’ merits on helping rescue cases spread wide already and so we received this little patient even from far away Mae Hong Son.
Making Taohoo a bit of a star who was brought to us in a real ambulance! Thanks to all the loving people who helped this dear little dog.

Thanks again to the nurses at a hospital in Mae Hong Son province who had found Taohoo hit by a car and arranged her transport with the ambulance! And thanks to volunteer vet nurse Amanda for taking care of Taohoo’s operated fracture & all our other sick and injured dogs – you did a wonderful job, Amanda!

Do you remember little Mii Boon who a few weeks ago was hit by a car and paralyzed?

He needed a very expensive operation to offer him the chance of walking again and within one day of telling his story on FB we had the 10,000bt needed for his operation through the wonderful donations of our supporters, so THANK YOU ALL!

Our dear little Mii Boon is doing great! He is already walking. He is recovering very well from his big surgery.

He is a lovely natured very happy dog, that gets along with other dogs very well and as you can see from his marvellous recovery you may be can put him off his feet but not for long.

Now we are looking for a comlete happy end and try to find a foster and/or even better a permanent home for Mii Boon.

He is a very friendly guy, perfect addition to any family!

Care for Dogs Foundation is looking for a traveller able (and willing) to accompany Duchess and Ellie to Germany where their new owner is longing to pick them up. The dogs’ travel costs will be completely covered.

If you are travelling from Bangkok to the Netherlands (any location) with KLM from August 26th to the end of September please consider accompanying Duchess and Ellie, our cherished mother and daughter rescue dogs, to their new home. Duchess and Ellie are dachshunds so they are quite small and will travel in the same crate.

It’s an easy procedure. We meet you at the airport; check in the dogs together with you and, in Germany, Duchess and Ellie’s new owner will pick them up at the airport. Care for Dogs Foundation will prepare all administration papers and all costs will be paid for by Duchess and Ellie’s new owner.

Dogs of this size will be checked in as luggage – of course they have a special compartment. On arrival, they can be picked up easily at the baggage claim.

Mii Boon had been living on the streets in Sankampaeng. Life on the streets is never safe and poor Mii Boon was hit by a car which caused severe pelvic-
and leg fractures.

He’s 1 – 2 years old and a very sweet and affectionate little fellow. Mii Boon will be operated today and we hope that he will be able to walk again. He seems to have a strong will to be able to move again and we hope this will help for his recovery. Because it’s a complicated surgery the operation costs will be approx. 10.000 Baht and he will need 2-3 months of intensive after care.

We have got a sponsor for 4.000 Baht already – if you would be able to help towards the remaining costs of Mii Boons operation it would be wonderful – every contribution, however big or small, is greatly appreciated!
