When trying to find new homes for adoptions we always try to make sure new owners understand that with taking a dog they agree to a life long commitment for taking care and we couldn’t be more happy when years later we learn our dream became true.

So read here what Lani Becker has to tell as her story shows much more than just how to take care:

I will never forget the day 4 ½ years ago that I went with the Nakorn Payap International School Care For Dogs Club to visit the shelter. I wasn’t sure what I would see, but knew that it would be something that would stay with me for a long time.

We went in and I was sitting on a bench taking in all of the activity around me. Dogs of all shapes and sizes, running, jumping, growling and chasing. Then from behind a wall came a small bundle of dirty white hair…slowly making his way to me. He came up and sat at my feet and laid his head against me and I was smitten. I fell in love with him at that moment.

When I heard that he had been hit by a car a few months earlier, was in a coma for ten days and just needs a quiet place to call home…I was ready to take him. However, I had to think this through and make sure that I was ready to take on the responsibility of a dog again. It would put a damper on my traveling.

After conferring with family and friends, and finding myself very emotional when I thought about him. I told Elissa that I wanted to take him. She began the ball rolling and called Care for Dogs who got in touch with the previous owners (thankfully they didn’t want him back) and on October 23, 2007 I went to the shelter and came out with this little guy.

We first had to get rid of the parasites that he had inside him, and this was a years worth of vet visits, medication and blood checking. It was a great day when we got a clean bill of health.

There was a lot to learn about Eddie Poodle. He didn’t bark (still doesn’t) except in his sleep. He would actually fall asleep sitting up and then collapse in a heap…still sleeping. A friend, who taught Psychology at the school was teaching the kids about various conditions that people have, and read that there is one which is common in both man and canine…narcolepsy. If you ever picked him up when he is in this state, he is like a limp rag. The episodes only last 5-10 minutes. At least I now knew what it was. They happen 2-3 times a day, and with no reason. They are what makes him special.

It took about a year for him to begin to gain weight (those darn parasites) and during this time his hair turned from an apricot to a white with a few apricot areas.

Eddie is my best friend. He waits for me in the afternoon, is known to sleep in bed with me, makes sure that my dinner plate is spotless, and loves to take tuk tuk rides. He still walks slowly (unless you throw his rubber ball and then there is speed in those little short legs). He can’t jump up on the couch or bed, but once up there can get himself down. You will never take him for a walk, for when you put his harness on him and attach the leash he gets very stubborn and won’t move. And those little short legs are very strong.

Eddie loves everyone, doesn’t have great eyesight, his hearing isn’t perfect… but he has a lot of love to give and has given it to me freely. I cannot imagine my life without him. The past four years have just flown bye and I still remember that day when I first saw him walking across the yard with his head down. Someone was sure looking down on us making sure that we met because we needed each other.

Thank you Care for Dogs for saving this little guy and giving him to me. Thank you Elissa for all of your support over the past four years. And I know he can’t read this, but thank you Eddie for your love. You are so very special to me.

We’re always happy to get news from our former shelter doggies who made it to the their very own family. Especially when regarded as “dogs with special needs” as our handicapped fellows like Sheba.

Getting an interview with the dog itself like Siri and Michael her new owners managed to do makes us even more glad :

My name used to be Shep , I am a three legged dog, of unknown age , though no longer young. I believe there is quite a bit of German Sheppard in me, hence the name.

However when I came to Spirit House I was found to be a girl, and re-named Sheba, which I rather like , as it was the name of a famous human queen, and I am feeling quite regal these days.
I spent most of my life in various shelters. When I was young I lost a leg in an accident and I guess not many people want a three legged dog.

Then one day, about a year ago, Siri and Michael from Spirit House came to Care for Dogs and took me back to their home in Mae Rim.
They were very kind at Care for Dogs and looked after me well, but it was a little crowded for an old lady like myself.

Here there are only eleven other dogs and I get on really well with all of them.
We have a lake and twelve rai to run around in. We are taken for an hour’s walk every day along the river and through the rice paddies, although I tend to prefer to relax by the pool as it is a little hard for me to keep up with the younger four legged members of the family.

We get plenty of home cooked food , lots of love and cuddles and a vet that comes to the house.
What more could a dog want, sometimes I wake up and think I have died and gone to doggy heaven.
I have written this in human language as I want to encourage all good hearted humans to give a dog in need a home, ADOPT A DOG, and create a happy ending……

Just a short look back into history:
They opted for an older dog and when they saw Jimmy, they just knew that he was the dog for them.

Jimmy is an older dog who has developed some medical problems – he needs life-long heart medication for his heart problems, he does not use one of his hind legs because of an old injury, and he needs eye drops. But besides that he is a very mellow guy with a golden heart and all he wants is a warm, comfy place and some love and care for his golden years. He is not that active, needy and quickly adapted to a new environment. Despite Jimmy’s medical problems, Tony and Su knew they wanted to offer him a safe haven, where he can enjoy his life, away from the restless and hectic environment of a dog shelter – a loving home of his own.

Tony, Su and their two children have been a wonderful family for our old Jimmy, and he is very loved within his new pack and well accepted by the other dogs of Tony’s and Su’s. (Jimmy is the smaller framed, white coated dog you see in the pictures).

We have gotten heartwarming updates from Tony how Jimmy has settled in with his new family:

“Jimmy has settled down very well. He eats heartily and shows great curiosity, searching things out and, despite his rear leg problem, covers a lot of ground. He often settles down next to the fish pool and seems to enjoy the mountain view. He also sleeps often and very soundly. He has been completely accepted by the other dogs. I’m going to take him to a very good vet I know for a full check up including blood analysis.

Jimmy is so happy. The looks on his face tells you has found some sort of heaven with lots of grass, bushes and flowers. He sleeps on a soft bed with a personal fan to clear away the insects. His breathing is very steady. His appetite is very good. We love him a lot.”

Regards
Tony & family

These words make us hope for a safe heaven for other older dogs too.

She adopted this dynamic duo on last Adoption Fair.

We changed “Jim’s” name to “Peanut” …she didn’t seem to know her name, so I don’t think it will bother her.

So they are both doing well. They have a big bed under my desk, and mostly are staying there in the aircon during the day. They have more pillows in my bedroom for nights, and “Peanut” quite likes to sit on my bed during the day and look out the window. (Because she is fearful to come out in the mornings …so she stays in there, or keeps retreating back to there, when other dogs show interest in her.)

Peanut was the most shy but each day she is better. She doesn’t run away from me now when I approach her. She sits on my lap when I am on the computer sometimes, and sits in bed with me when I read, watch TV. She was attacking my 17 year old Yorkie the first 2 days, protecting her beds …but now they are okay. My Yorkie has a bit of dementia, a bit blind and deaf, but not totally …so she has periods were she paces around and Peanut was jumping her when she strayed into, previously, what was her bed area. So now they are sharing.

Donut is just fine too. She gets brushed each day. Likes to sit near my feet and follows me from room to room like she has always been living here. She and Peanut play around in the mornings, and yesterday they had their first dental bones.

Anyway, my daughter really loves them too and is so excited to see them when she comes home from school. Donut slept in her bed last night for the first time. Thanks so much for taking care of them before, and letting us adopt them!

Best Regards,
Michelle

Within her new family she has a cute 1 year old miniature pincher to play with!

Here is the feedback we got from them already:

It was lovely meeting you yesterday- you guys do a wonderful job at the shelter and it was great to meet all the dogs! She seemed to settle in nicely yesterday, enjoying lots of cuddles on the sofa, there were some small territorial issues when she tried to claim Sully’s bed lol but we were ‘pack leaders’ and diffused it quickly he he We took her to the vets and she got an all clear check up and then gave her a bath – she looked like a different dog when she was finished! . We decided to change her name to Boo after a suggestion from our niece (now we have two Monsters Inc movie characters-Boo and Sully). We are helping her learn to trust in her new family and share with her new playmate.

Thanks again

From

Anna, Lynn, Sully and Boo!

We love to hear updates on our special friends.

So hear the news from Penny’s new family.

Hello, Hanna,
…
As for the her, Penny/Chuck, she is the sweetest, funniest, most loveable and huggable dog we have ever had. We just love her and she loves us. Particularly the girls. She is so attached to them that this sometimes really is a problem. When they leave the house with us, by car, Chuck stays in the yard peacefully, not happy about it but accepting it (in the beginning we tried to take her everywhere with us, to the restaurants and other places, but she didn’t like it, was shivering all over, so no fun for her).

But – when the girls used to leave the house by foot and she could see them walking away she chewed up the mesh wire we have put all over the fence because she used to squeeze through the bars several times on such occasions.

And she would always find them wherever they were within the compound (mostly swimming pool at the Club house or anywhere, in any friend’s house). So, she is quite practically clever. She knows she cannot beat the car, but foot transportation she can manage. And how! It is amazing how fast she can run with her little leg… Anyway, now we have doubled the wiring and she capitulated, is not trying any more. But howls like hell when they go. They, however really rarely leave Chuck behind. She goes with them and us wherever she is allowed or happy to go.

And as she lives and sleeps in the house, I have to tell you also, because I find it quite impressive, how she, from the start got it what “house breaking” is. She never did anything in the house, whenever she needs to go, she asks to be let out and does her little and big need in the garden. What a lady! And manages stairs as if she has been born on them. Flies up and down. Great, just great.
…
So, thanks again for your help and all the best to you and your efforts to change lives of those wonderful beings you are so well caring for.

Best regards,

Jade Conrad

Have a look and enjoy and may be consider joining them, it’s quite easy just start by contact Care for Dogs.

Friday the 13th sure is lucky for some! And yesterday Piag finally found his furever family and was adopted by Daniel Maxwell and his beautiful family. Yay! Piag is on of seven dogs that we recently rescued from living hell, read the story here: “When Words Fail Dogs: 150 Caged Dogs in Phayao..”

One of the 4 kittens rescued recently, see here: (“Dog found Kittens – Kittens find you!?”…), was adopted last Friday (6th of May). The family also adopted a puppy called Spotty from us a couple of weeks ago and have now found a new furry friend for their pack. She is a one lucky kitten. As one of her sister managed to charm her foster mom (always a danger when fostering there are still 2 female kittens looking for new homes: a ginger & tortoiseshell – call us to arrange a meeting.

And as there never can be enough, here two more:

Was it’s Nola’s emotional call (see here …) for looking to the beauties of the grown up dogs, I don’t know, but in the days following our adoption fair, some more dogs found a hopefully forever home.

It has been a week with a lot ups and downs at the shelter.
And here are the lucky ones (doggies and I’m sure their humans, too):

****

Leo and Lilly, our long time residents were adopted to same family by a very nice american couple! They will have a big yard to run around and kids to play with. The humans and the dogs had instant chemistry – Gambill family came to adopt one dog, but fell in love with both of them! Now Lilly and Leo have a pack of their own

****

A thai lady adopted one of our rescued puppies whose mummy had died. Her friend adopted Samlii the injured Shitzu that was hit by a car and that friend directed her to us for adoption. This puppy was named Julie and was still very young, all the best for her growing up safely!

****

Our part-time vet, Dr. Ing fell in love with her patient, Fluffy, the pomerian. Fluffy is originally from a temple where our volunteer Maggi makes her regular visits, but was not taken cared of properly and was looking for a new home. Dr. Ing is opening up her own practice – Hang Dong Animal hospital, and Fluffy will join her to be the office pet during her working hours and coming home with her in the evening. The dog to become a partner with it’s own private vet is surely a lucky dog and will be very well taken cared for!

****
Thai family with big grounds and facilities came to adopt dogs – and adopted 5 of them!
Rambo & Rascal & Bruiser have residenting at the shelter for quite a long time already but are now heading for a home of their own together! They will also have 2 great young ladies going with them – Amber, a beautiful brown husky mix and Noy, a small sized shorthaired loving Thai girl. Nola will be reporting about their trip to their new home next Monday, pictures will be published soon.

****

About a week ago Sissi, the female dog was also adopted by a foreign -thai couple with a very cute 5 years old daughter. Sissi has a friend there already, a Siberian Husky male and they have a yard to play and run around at! Sorry the picture I managed to take with all the hassle is not very good unfortunately.. so I won’t attach it now.

Hopefully more great adoptions to announce soon.. let’s keep our fingers crossed! We will miss at the shelter these dogs a lot and at the same time we are very very happy that they finally have a home to call their own!

Sometimes it takes just one day making two dogs happy. That was the case at December 23th december when Penny and Beauty had and were an early X-mas present.

Here’s Penny’s story Hanna told us:

Family Conrad including their 2 teenage daughters came over to the shelter,
they had in mind to adopt a puppy.

Jum was bringing over the puppies, but meanwhile our dear Penny with her mohawk was lurking behind the gate and lashing her eyelashes and wagging her tail to the family.

There the family were, waiting for me as I was having a talk with another visitor, and Penny just melted their hearts. They petted the puppies a bit, but there was only room for Penny, y’know, the connection was there!! We took Penny in to the visitor area and they all just cuddled her, she went for every member of the family and just loved them

It took them like ten seconds to make the decision. They asked about her leg & walking, but as we know she can easily go for walks and just loves it. So now she will live in a house with a yard and two dog loving girls pampering her with attention.. Oh the best!

*************

And there was Beauty – Do you remember her? She was subject of one very special beauty contest.
If you look back, who would have thought she ever could charm anyone. Well she became a success story of CfD.

And today was the day and Khun Gaseed Khamnoi became the ultimate winner of the contest by his decision to adopt that beautiful dog and making Beauty an addition to his family where she’ll be awaited by another doggie who has already found its way for CfD to Khun Gasees Khamnoi.
