In a previous post, we spoke about the contact we had received from a school in America, who were searching the internet for animal welfare causes they could help in some way.

Today we received an email update from Class 4H of Ascension School, Louisville USA who have now re-branded themselves “Ascension 4H Sewing Stars”. They look a very motivated group and to now be in a position to relate their faces to the work they have committed and the prospect of giving the dogs increased comfort gives their project all the more value.

The initiative of these folks is just amazing, now they are publishing in local media about their work and asking for recycled materials to be made available and building their network to include others in their project. This is the article published in their local paper:

The 4-H Sewing Stars of Ascension School have been working selflessly on “Snuggles” for animals in shelters.  The 4H Sewing Stars are sewing up security blankets for cats and dogs living in hard, cold cages.

They are combining the efforts of recycling, donating, and sewing.  They make the Snuggles out of left over draperies, old sweaters, and donated fabrics.  The animals won’t mind if the sweater was from last season, just as long as it keeps them warm and comfortable in their cages.

At 4:00PM on Friday, May 30^th, the 4H Sewing Stars took a field trip to the Kentucky Humane Society to make their second donation of Snuggles.  The Sewing Stars have plans to ship donations to the Bullitt County Animal Rescue, as well as shelters overseas. These shelters and  many more are members of the Snuggles Project and can be found online at www.snugglesproject.org .

4-H Ambassador and Snuggles Project leader, Shelby Comstock, is working with the Paws Club and Sewing Club at Ballard High School this fall to get high school students involved in the project.  If you are interested in helping by donating any fabric or would like more information, you can contact Shelby through the 4-H Office at (502) 569-2344.

Well done 4h Sewing Stars – We look forward to receiving your Snuggles parcel very soon. They will come in very handy for the many puppies we have at this time of year and with Winter, fast approaching, the added comfort will make a big difference to their cold start in life.
