13 new shelter residents within two hours

In the early morning at 6.00 a.m. the phone was ringing – the display shows “Shelter”.

I always worry when I get an early morning call from our dog caretakers. We take in regularly sick and injured dogs for medical treatment, and though bringing them to the vet for diagnosis and treatment and providing medical care at the shelter, some dogs are already in such a poor state that they won’t be able to make it. So early morning calls can sometimes be about a dog that has passed away during the night.

DSCF0022Luckily this was not the case today. However, the news I got from Khun Saay left me with mixed feelings as well. He had heard the dogs barking and checked out to see what was going on. What he found was a big rice sack in front of the shelter, not filled with rice, but with 12 puppies, about 3-4 weeks old.

We have approx. 20 puppies at the shelter already and 12 more youngsters will add additional pressure on us – all enclosures are full -where should we keep them, will they get adopted as puppies or will they end up staying etc. etc. And what a pity we didn’t have the chance to have the mother (or two mothers) sterilized – in another 6 months the next litter of puppies will be born – what will happen with them? Not mentioning that these puppies should have stayed for at least another four weeks with their mom to get a good immunity through the milk from their mom and for socializing.

These photos show the puppies after their arrival this morning in our visitor area – they still look a bit shy and scared, separated from their mom, being put in a dark sack, not knowing what was happening to them. Khun Saay has given them breakfast and they were eager to eat. Our new volunteer Hannah was giving them love and cuddles, then de-worming and bathing them, followed by naming and registration.

They reminded me at the 20 “river puppies” that had been dumped under a bridge and have been rescued by Ally and Soraya last December. Luckily all of them could find a home, the last one, Chris, was adopted by our new shelter coordinator Grib who has fallen in love with her. But there are other puppies at our shelter who haven’t been so lucky, they are in the meantime 5, 6 or 7 months old and in this age they are already having a hard time finding a home.

Before 8 am another dog was brought to us, Khay-Dao, who had been hit by a car this morning. So from one day to another our already high shelter numbers were increasing with another 13 residents. Khun Nod brought Khay-Dao to the vet, an x-ray showed that his leg was broken, he will be operated today.

I’m back at the computer – printing more adoption ads. If you would like to give a puppy or a dog a new home, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us.

" It makes me deeply sad to see when dogs that have been cared for, get poisoned, or finding dogs, that were killed to be eaten, or holding dumped sick puppies that die in our arms.[More]"
